This place something for everybody, whether they are surfers, windsurfers or kite surfers, and whether they are experienced or not. It is set in a very nice area that is a protected wildlife haven, with the dunes either side of the river harbouring an interesting variety of wildlife.
The beach is big and sandy, with no crowds whatsoever. The area is absolutely gorgeous, with clean white sand for miles in any direction. The water is warm in summer and will be in the mid to high 20s so only shorts will be required, while the rest of the year will be cooler and will need you to have a decent wetsuit.
The best conditions here are found during the cyclone season between January and April. You get a frontal wind that blows consistently and is fairly strong, ranging between 15 and 25 knots or even more on a good day. The water is shallow close to shore before dropping off, and is pretty clean. The best time to be here is with the water at the high tide position, when the surface will be flat on the inside and provide some great waves up to about 3 m high on the sandbar outside.
Parking is about 5 minutes walk away from the river itself, and there is plenty of it on the grass. This protected area has no facilities, but the town of Ruakaka Is just to the south and has a couple of restaurants and bars.
There aren't any hazards here as long as you keep your wits about you, so just enjoy the water and the scenery.
